The Trio KD-650 Quartz locked direct drive turntable (known as the Kenwood KD-650 in the rest of the world outside of the UK and Japan) was produced at a time when the Trio-Kenwood company of Japan was getting really seroius about producing state of the art turntables. It was their finest turntable at that time and remained so until they released the L-07D in 1979.

There was also a version available without arm, known as the Trio KD-600 or Kenwood KD-600 which most buyers would have mated with a SME Series II or Series III.

The marble-look plinth was very heavy and rigid, being made from a resin-based compound that was mixed with glass powder and minerals and formed at very high temperature. As well as having appropriate acoustic properties, it looked rather good too!

These were excellent high-end turntables which went a long way to proving the superiority of well-engineered direct drives over easier and cheaper to produce belt-drives. These are fairly rare now but well worth hunting down.
